You never know what these puppets will do next. That is the thread running through Puppet Up! Uncensored at Venetian. Imagine the improv of Whose Line Is It Anyway, the naughty tenor of Avenue Q, and the unmistakable personality of the Muppets. "It's not always easy to describe," says the show's co-creator Brian Henson, who helms the company named after his father. "It's sort of like The Matrix." Disney owns the Muppets these days, but the 60 or so characters onstage summon the classic characteristics of Jim Henson's originals. Puppet Up! advances the cause by bringing a half-dozen comic puppeteers to the stage to perform with their puppet partners in full view. Host and co-creator Patrick Bristow takes suggestions from the audience and directs the comics to select from a gallery of puppets. A characteristic topic is "My first prostate exam," which was once called out during a show in Pasadena. In another, a scene advised about the do's and don'ts of, ahem, gland handling in public (thus the age sugges- tion). As Bristow says: "We like to think of it as irreverent and hilarious, impressive, and performed by these uniquely talented performers." And the puppets! Don't forget them.
