That I was wearing white sequins while I hopped around in pain— won- dering whether I should still go to the event (really?)—seemed like such an entertaining allegory for desert living. Until my arm went numb. The upside, for you sunny optimists: Israel's deathstalker and Africa's fat-tailed scorpion are considered more lethal. And I sought medical attention looking as cute as possible. But then, I'm often reminded of the unlikely relationship between this city and its desolate environment, which really always belonged to my friend, the now-defunct scorpion. I recently drove out near the Jean Dry Lake to see Ugo Rondinone's newly erected Seven Magic Mountains, the towering neon hoodoos that cut a vivid profile against the desert sky (read more about them on page 52). On the way, I passed a billboard featuring the work of last year's Art of the City cover star, JK Russ, a collage that combines faux and fabulous with natural landscape and cultural landmarks—part of the new ArtPop Street Gallery series to promote the arts in Las Vegas. This year's cover artist, Sush Machida, similarly mashes consumerism with nature and tradition. It's a conceit that works for us, even if we occasionally have to metabolize a neurotoxin to fully appreciate it. Enjoy our summer art issue! from left: Two big thrills: The grand opening of Intrigue at Wynn, and a red carpet snap with Michael B. Jordan; with Amanda Kouretas at artLIVE, a great event to benefit the Las Vegas Fashion Council and 18b, the Las Vegas Arts District; at the lovely new SW Veranda with Michael Weaver, Wynn's SVP of marketing. 26  vegasmagazine.com andr ea bennett With Yigal Azrouel before his show at Wynn Collection.
