40 BATSTO HISTORIC VILLAGE 31 Batsto Road, Hammonton (609) 561-0024 www.batstovillage.org Batsto Village is a New Jersey historic site, which is administered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Parks & Forestry. Located in the South Central Pinelands, this site is nationally recognized for its historical significance and beauty. The roots of Batsto Village can be traced back to 1766. Two centu- ries of American history are available to visitors, with the Pinelands environment as a scenic back- drop. The iron mining village at Batsto, a prin- cipal source of ammunition for the Revolution, continued to produce iron through the nine- teenth century. Traditional crafts are still practiced here, and you can enjoy the home of financier Joseph Wharton. Attractions include village build- ings, gristmill, saw mill, visitors center, museum and museum shop, and nature center. CEDAR BRIDGE TAVERN HISTORIC SITE 200 Old Halfway Road, Barnegat Township, 1-877-OCPARKS www.oceancountyparks.org Historic Cedar Bridge Tavern, located on 5 acres and surrounded by Bass River State Forest, dates back to 1816; however, the history of the site reaches back much further. It is rumored that the last skirmish of the American Revolution occurred here on December 27, 1782. A ceremony com- memorating this event is held at the site each year on the Sunday closest to December 27. Due to its two hundred year history as a hub for locals and a crossroads for travelers, the tavern is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. Currently the site is closed to the public while Ocean County works to learn more about the site, implement its historic preservation plan, protect its delicate structure, and preserve its unique story for future generations. The site will eventually be available for group tours.
