By Chris Bennett Special to The Freeman NORTH PRAIRIE — Old dogs can learn new tricks, and seasoned veterinarians can learn new and innova- tive ways to treat those dogs. Pain in his back that dated to college led Dr. Steve Raabe to explore the world of acupuncture. Raabe is the owner of Prairie Animal Hospital, 137 N. Oakridge Drive in North Prairie. During a severe bout of back pain in the late 1980s Raabe agreed to be treated with an acuscope. The acus- cope delivered an electric stimulus to the targeted area. "I was lying in the trunk of a station wagon, on the floor in the back," Raabe said of his ride to treatment. "That's the kind of pain I was in. I couldn't drive or sit." An acuscope treatment that started in Raabe's ear led the pain to dissipate. As he describes it 25 years later, the pain in his back started melting away, and the sensa- tion continued down his leg and through his foot. "It told me, 'Holy cow,'" Raabe said. "There really is something to acupuncture." Not one to ignore a new method of treatment, Raabe researched the use of acupuncture on animals. Today, Prairie Animal Hos- pital's website — http://www.prairieanimal- hospitalsc.com — details Raabe's interest in holistic pet medicine. A spectrum of care According to the Ameri- can Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, holis- tic medicine takes a com- plete picture of the patient — the environment, disease pattern, relationship of pet with owner and more — and develops a treatment proto- col using a wide range of therapies for healing. The holistic practitioner is interested not only in a medical history, but also in genetics, nutrition, environ- ment, family relationships, stress levels, and other fac- tors, according to the web- site of the AHVMA, www.ahvma.org. "It's kinder, more gentle approach," said Lori Mendelsohn Thomas, owner of Wisconsin Pet Care LLC. "The biggest reason I like holistic versus traditional medicine is you are instill- ing wellness versus treating illness."
