That's how Summer Sounds Co-President John Wallus describes the family-friendly, all-ages concert series that brings between 3,000 to 5,000 attendees to Cedar Creek Park every Friday night during the summer months, according to Wallus. Summer Sounds has brought Grammy winners, chart-toppers and bands that perform on the late-night circuit, along with out-of-town visitors from Chicago to Minneapolis. The 2016 lineup, announced today, features headliners that are on the rise, but also reserves the opener spots for local artists from the North Shore area. In its 14th year, Wallus said they will continue to raise the bar musically and offer as diverse a lineup as possible. "You can see music here that you will never see at the other (concert series) venues," he said. Wallus and his business partner, Sue Schrader, start each year with little to no money in the budget and work year-round fundraising and booking bands to create a free, top- notch event for the Cedarburg community. Summer Sounds is run by a small group of volunteers under a 501(c)(3) and is funded through sponsorships, private donations and beverage sales (though people are welcome to bring their own spirits to the event). "There is probably not a week that we're not talking about Summer Sounds," Wallus said. The series is kicking off the 2016 season June 17 with the new bandshell stage that was spearheaded and organized by the Rotary Club of Cedarburg- Grafton in celebration of the club's 50th anniversary, and made possible by a $200,000 donation from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. It will wrap up Aug. 19 with a "special treat." "People are going to want to be in the park that night," Wallus said. In addition to providing the weekly event, the nonprofit also tries to give back. The group pays volunteer groups to work the beverage tent and the soccer club to clean up the park Saturday mornings. It also partners with high school commercial art students to design event posters and provides the design winner with a check from BMO Harris Bank. Wallus said Summer Sounds has become the go- to event during the summer that binds the community together and he is happy to be a part of it.
