Engineering in Waukesha By Ryan Billingham Enterprise Staff OCONOMOWOC — He's not an engineer. At least, he's not a trained engineer. But Ben Nelson has built some impressive machines. He's Oconomowoc's elec- tric vehicle guru. His machines are clever modifications of cars and motorcycles — and other things — that turn them into gas-free electric or hybrid vehicles. The Oconomowoc Com- mon Council recently approved a deal with a Min- neapolis-based company to build an electric vehicle fast- charge station in the park- ing lot behind City Hall. The station will help connect Oconomowoc to a growing electric car charging infras- tructure from Minneapolis to Milwaukee and Chicago. For Nelson, it is great news. Some private compa- nies like the new Kwik Trip on Highway 67 are including free plug-ins, but they are a lower voltage and can take a long time to charge a car. The station, which will be built by ZEF Energy Inc., and will pay for itself through user fees, will fea- ture an industry-standard charging port and a fast charge time.
