112 VEGASMAGAZINE.COM PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY TRAN "THE LITERAL MEANING OF 'FOUNDRY' IS AN ESTABLISHMENT THAT PRODUCES METAL, CORRE- LATING WITH THE VENUE'S RUSTIC AND INDUSTRIAL DETAILS." –MATT MINICHINO SHAPE SHIFT SLS LAS VEGAS HAS TRANSFORMED LIFE NIGHTCLUB INTO THE FOUNDRY, BRINGING THE SPACE BACK TO ITS ROOTS AS A LIVE PERFORMANCE VENUE. Decades before SLS Las Vegas opened in summer 2014, the property at the corner of Sahara Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard—known since 1952 as the Sahara Hotel and Casino— had cemented its reputation as a magnet for visiting musicians ranging from Rat Packers to the Beatles. So when SLS announced its intention to turn its 20,000-square-foot nightclub Life into a 2,000-capacity live music venue called The Foundry, the decision signaled an obvious return to the property's roots. "SLS is already Vegas's home for live entertainment thanks to the Sayers Club, Foxtail Concert Series, and special perfor- mances at Foxtail Nightclub," says Matt Minichino, the property's vice president of nightlife and entertainment. "The Foundry really solidifies that." Revamping the venue involved the addition of an acoustic sound system and a 25-foot-by-65-foot stage; Life's visual elements, bars, and VIP seating, meanwhile, survived the makeover. "We aim to program 50 or more artists annually, spanning everything from rock and pop to EDM and hip-hop," Minichino adds. With acts like Lil Wayne, Santigold, and Todd Rundgren on deck, attracting an audience shouldn't be a problem. SLS Las Vegas, 702-761-7617; foundrylv.com . SPACE GRAND OPENING
