Jersey Shore University Medical Center has the distinction of being an academic hospital, and its Level II Trauma Center treats more than 1,600 patients each year. Additionally, there are more than one hundred Meridian facilities in its vast network throughout the region specializing in health and fitness, rehabilitation, urgent care, after care, occupational health, behavioral health, outpatient sur- gery, and imaging. Ocean Medical Center In Brick Ocean Medical Center opened its doors in 1984 as Brick Hospital and was the sister hospital to Point Pleasant Hospital, which opened in 1918 and was located along the Manasquan River. Mark Weinberg Several name changes, expansions, and consolidations would take place at both facilities through 2001, when Point Pleasant Hospital officially closed its doors. However, the state's first satellite emergency department opened at the former hospital site in 2001, then relocated across the canal to Point Pleasant Beach in 2004. Today, Ocean Medical Center has 281 beds, a state-of-the-art emergency facility, a unit dedicated to acute care of the elderly, a comprehensive surgical program (including robotic technol- ogy and joint replacement), vascular services, an advanced infusion and radiology oncology department, and single room maternity units.
