With three spaces offering different shows each month (two galleries are for solo artists; the Studio Gallery usually has a members' exhibit), there are about thirty-four total exhibits a year. Gallery Chairperson Geri Ambrose and the Gallery Committee work a full year in advance to ensure all galleries have changing exhibits each month. "These three galleries rep- resent a really good venue to ama- teur and professional artists," says Van Ostrand. She adds, "It's a great space…to celebrate the artists and their art." Lido adds how the shows are not only beneficial to the artists, but to the surrounding community. "You have the unique opportunity to talk to the artist and ask questions." Indeed, in an era when funding for the arts is always at risk, the Guild's members and the local community are incredibly fortunate to have their own beautiful and historic gathering place where art and creative expres- sion can flourish. So what does the future hold? Van Ostrand is excited about the upcoming Artisan's River Market, an indoor and outdoor art show featuring the work of twenty-five to thirty artists offering paintings, pho- tographs, prints, pottery and more. It will be held on Sunday, June 5, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in conjunction with the Barnegat Bay Festival, where the Guild will also have a table doing projects with children. She also says she sees classes and workshops "going into crafts" in keeping with current trends. Finally, as to membership, she jokes that she'd love to see more "young guys who can lift stuff!" ◆ The Ocean County Artists' Guild is located at 22 Chestnut Avenue in Island Heights.
