One day while I was photographing the ospreys that have a nest along the road near the Nature Center, this little guy walked across the street. The raccoon didn't seem the least bit concerned with me. It continued from the bay side across to the ocean side and into the brush. Although it looks bright, the photo was taken at dusk. Most raccoons only come out at night. Opposite page, top: Monarch Butterfly, Cattus Island County Park. This monarch butterfly was captured at Cattus Island in Toms River. Cattus Island is such a wonderful place during spring. I always stop by their butterfly garden on my walks to the bay. There are several different species that occupy the garden. Butterflies are such beautiful, delicate creatures. They are very tolerant, and you can usually get some great close-ups. The monarchs are noted for their long migration to Mexico in the fall. Opposite page, bottom: Chipmunk, Toms River. This is one of the resident chipmunks that live in the protected lands along Barnegat Bay near my home. It is constantly gathering food and never stops from sunrise until sunset. It's always cooperative and often stops to let me take some portraits.
