"Moving items up from the ground level helps in our efforts to get the building in operational condition quickly should we be affected by another storm that causes flooding," Bartlett said. Additionally, the renovation work includes upgrading the building and restrooms to meet all requirements set by the Americans with Disabilities Act. The program room will also be expanded so that larger groups can be accommodated. Ocean County will be reimbursed for the work with federal funding because the building was damaged by Sandy. Bartlett said, "When the work is done, the building will once again be the centerpiece of the park. We are looking forward to the completion of the project and the reopening of the Environmental Center." The work is expected to be com- pleted by the fall of 2016. —Jill Ocone The rest of Cattus Island County Park is open and waiting for you; only a few trails still remain inaccessible. The park is locat- ed at 1170 Cattus Island Boulevard (off Fischer Boulevard) in Toms River. The unspoiled beauty of nature is the main attraction of Cattus Island. This environmentally sensitive park boasts miles of trails, many offering lovely vistas of the adjacent Silver Bay. For nature lovers, the park's 500-acres offer panoramic bay views, hiking trails, a boardwalk through the wet- lands, a conservation area, bird watching, crabbing and fishing, picnic areas, a play- ground, a beautiful Butterfly Garden, and cross-country skiing in the winter. Cattus Island is the perfect place to go if you find yourself wanting to escape into nature. Allow the marshes, trails, and wild- life to be your companions, stay for a few minutes or the day, and return to the man- made world refreshed and revitalized.
