leTTer From THe ediTor
recently, a reporter interviewed me for
a series of stories he's creating about
harrisburg. his first question was this: "What
is theburg?"
I wasn't certain if he wanted a factual
explanation or my personal approach
to creating the magazine. So, I split the
difference and gave him both.
We're a free, general-interest, monthly
magazine, I told him, with a supporting online
presence. We tell the stories of the people of
the greater harrisburg area and try to do so
in a realistic, respectful and engaging way.
"Who is your target audience?" he asked.
"everyone," I responded.
I told him that theburg runs counter to two
of the principal myths of publications today.
the first is that, to be successful, a publication
must appeal to a niche audience. the second
myth is that, well, print itself is dead.
In fact, over the past three years, we've
dramatically expanded both our print run
and our distribution. If general-interest, print
magazines are doomed, someone better tell
the people of central Pennsylvania because
we can't seem to meet the demand.
our web traffic also has increased, but
honestly, people seek out our print edition
foremost. they seem to like the product,
which I'm happy about. but, importantly,
a local publication like theburg needs to
connect in a genuine way with its community,
and print simply does that better than digital.
So, what should you expect from this print
edition of theburg?
Like I just said, stories of the people here: your
family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, etc.
you'll discover folks helping others, building
things, starting businesses, making art. And,
since it's March, we have an expanded focus
on the home and garden.
So, stash away those heavy coats, knit hats
and fur-lined gloves for another year. It's time
to think warm thoughts as the winter passes
on. the state's famous groundhog predicted
an early spring this year, and who am I to
question his forecasting ability?
