Whether old, young or in between, showing off the skills of self-taught amateurs on TV is all the rage. Sometimes it feels like every- one's in on it; NBC has "Food Fighters," Fox has "MasterChef" and "MasterChef Junior," and Food Network has "Worst Cooks in America," which goes the opposite route and tries to turn bad cooks into passable ones. Last season, though, Food Network went a bit more main- stream with "All-Star Academy," and starting Sunday, Feb. 14, it's back for a second season with new contestants, new mentors and new guest judges (or "professors," as the show refers to them). The basic premise is familiar: a group of better-than-average home cooks compete against each other in a series of cook- ing challenges that whittles them down until, in the end, one of them goes home with the taste of victory and the feel of a wallet full of cash: in this case, a cool $50,000. In "All-Star Academy," though, the contestants aren't just looking to win — they're also looking to learn. In the premiere, they're divided up into teams by four professional cooks — the mentors — who guide them through the com- petition, giving advice as they cook, showing them advanced cooking techniques and doing whatever they can to train up their chosen students to pull off a win. And who are these four mentors? Returning from last season are Iron Chef and reg- ular "Chopped" host Alex Guarnaschelli and "Top Chef Masters" host Curtis Stone. Joining them, replacing last season's Bobby Flay ("Beat Bobby Flay") and Michael Symon ("The Chew"), are "Restaurant: Impossible" host Robert Irvine and "Bizarre Foods'" Andrew Zimmern. While there's no cash on the line for these pros, there are bragging rights for lead- ing their team to victory. Last season, Flay led home cook Joseph Harris to victory, and with the reigning champ on leave, the door is wide open for any of the four mentors to seize the win. The second season of "All- Star Academy" premieres Sunday, Feb. 14, on Food Network.
