Since the 2012 finale of "Des- perate Housewives," Eva Longoria has had a smattering of acting roles, turning her attention more towards the producing and direct- ing side of things. She still holds court as execu- tive producer in her new comedy series, "Telenovela," but fans of the funny former beauty queen will be excited to see her in front of the camera again as she steps into the show's lead role. "Tele- novela" premiered in December, and a new episode airs Monday, Feb. 8, on NBC. Longoria's first major acting role was in "The Young and the Restless" from 2001 to 2003, but it was in her "Desperate House- wives" role that she really began to make a name for herself. Over the dramedy's eight seasons, she earned several awards and nomi- nations for her portrayal of model- turned-trophy-wife Gabrielle Solis, including a Golden Globe nod for Best Performance by an Actress. In contrast to her "House- wives" character, who oozed with confidence and took nothing from no one, the lead in "Telenovela" is racked with self-doubt. Ana Sofia Calderon is the star of the tele- novela "Las Leyes de Pasión." A telenovela, if you don't know, is a Spanish serial drama — like a soap but with a limited run. Ana, however, doesn't speak Spanish and is acutely aware of this fact: "She's in a great big world of be- ing a Latin star, but yet insecure about 'Am I Latin enough?'" Long- oria told Variety. The actress can relate. A ninth- generation American of Mexican descent, Longoria didn't grow up speaking Spanish, though her par- ents spoke it to each other. "It's very difficult to live in [the Latin] community if you don't speak Spanish — everyone will judge you," she said in an EFE interview. This explains why "Telenovela's" Ana, however beautiful and suc- cessful, is also terribly insecure. The series follows her and her castmates in their daily lives, on set and behind the scenes of "Las Leyes de Pasión." Just like any good telenovela, the actors' lives are brimming with drama, over- the-top emotions and hilarious chaos. Things get sticky for Ana when a new president (Zachary Levi, "Chuck") takes over her show's network and hires none other than her ex-husband, Xavier — played by real-life telenovela star Jencar- Feature this week
