2 • Milwaukee County Post • February 5, 2016 By MATT MASTERSON Conley News Service MILWAUKEE — Former Wisconsin U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold appears to be building his lead over incumbent Ron Johnson as he attempts to win back the seat he lost to Johnson in 2012. The Democrat Feingold received 50 percent of votes in the newly released Marquette University Law School poll, while Johnson, a Republican, saw 37 per- cent of the vote. The previous poll — released in November — showed Feingold with a 49- 38 lead over Johnson. The poll was conducted from Jan. 21 to 24. The full sample included 806 regis- tered voters interviewed by cellphone or landline, with a margin of error of +/-4.0 percentage points. Results for the Republican nomination are based on 313 respondents who said they will vote in the Republican primary in April. Results for the Democratic nomination are based on 312 respon- dents who said they will vote in the Democratic pri- mary. While the results are decidedly in Feingold's favor, voters continue to lack opinions about the U.S. Senate candidates. Forty-one percent said they haven't heard enough or don't have an opinion about Johnson while another 25 percent said the same about Feingold. In November, 35 percent lacked an opinion of Johnson and 22 percent were without a view of Feingold. Johnson is rated favorably by 26 percent and unfavorably by 33 percent, while Feingold receives a 44 percent favorable and 30 percent unfavorable rat- ing. In the previous poll, Johnson w a s r a t e d f a v o r - ably by 27 per- cent and unf avor- ably by 38 per- c e n t , w h i l e Feingold held a 43 percent favorable and 36 percent unfavorable rating. As for the 2016 presiden- tial race, Donald Trump is the choice of Republicans in Wisconsin, according to the latest poll results. In the poll taken more than a week before the Iowa caucuses, Trump was supported by 24 percent, followed by Marco Rubio at 18 percent and Ted Cruz at 16 percent. Ben Carson was supported by 8 percent, with Chris Christie at 5 percent. In November, Carson led with 22 percent of the vote, narrowly edging out Trump and Rubio, who each received 19 percent. On the Democratic side of the coin, Hillary Clinton pulled in 45 percent of the vote, while 43 percent of registered voters in that party chose Bernie Sanders. In the November poll, Clinton held 50 per- cent, with Sanders at 41 percent. Republican voters were also asked who they think is most likely to win their party's nomination, regardless of personal preference. Forty-nine per- cent see Trump as the most likely nominee, followed by Cruz at 20 percent and Rubio at 10 percent. As for Democrats, 65 percent think Clinton is the most likely nominee, with 27 percent saying Sanders is most likely to win the nom- ination. In possible matchups for the November general elec- tion, Sanders leads Rubio by 11 points, Cruz by 12, and Trump by 18. Clinton edges Rubio and Cruz by 1 point each while holding a 9-point margin over Trump.
