Data released this week from Milwaukee-based advocacy organization School Choice Wisconsin has revealed a 65 per- cent rise, in year-over-year-com- parisons, of schools taking part in school choice — known formal- ly as the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program — for the upcom- ing school year. Expanding school choice across the state was controversial in some circles, through the con- cept of vouchers and other mech- anisms to enroll a student outside his or her neighborhood public school has long been a familiar concept within Milwaukee. Open enrollment in the WPCP kicked off this week and runs through April 20. With all of the numbers tallied, the number of schools participating in the pro- gram for the 2016-2017 stands at 135. A year ago, 82 schools took part in the school choice pro- gram. In a statement, Jim Bender, president of School Choice Wisconsin, said participation runs the gamut of all of the state's geographic areas. "From Park Falls to Oconomowoc, from Osceola to Marinette, from Muskego to Ashland, schools are responding to demand from parents for expanded educational opportuni- ties," Bender said. "Demand for the school choice program is undeniable." Milwaukee Public Schools is attempting to do its part to meet students' disparate needs, district spokesperson Tony Tagliavia said. He pointed to the district's homegrown Three-Choice Enrollment program, which is underway through Feb.19. "MPS offers many choices to families, from neighborhood schools to specialty schools and charter schools," Tagliavia said. The district has implemented a series of changes in an effort to accommodate as many students School choice participation grows locally, statewide and nationally See SCHOOL CHOICE on Page 5 Opinion on movement remains mixed SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13th, 2016 Dinner Includes ADULT • $10 CHILD under 12 • $8 Available Church of the Immaculate Conception 1023 E.
