By Brian Huber Freeman Staff BROOKFIELD — As the only man to play profession- al football for coach Vince Lombardi on active duty squads in both Green Bay and Washington, Brook- field's Bob Long had a unique perspective heading into this year's NFC Wild Card game. But when asked what he thinks about the Packers' performance, the former wide receiver punted, sort of. "I have some real theories about this year's Packers team about them not having speed. You gotta have speed, and they don't have much speed to stretch the defense and get the linebackers off the line of scrimmage and the Packers offensively haven't looked very good the last eight to 10 weeks. They are really sputtering," he said. "Right now the Redskins are on what, (winning) the last four games with Cousins at quarterback. ... Every- thing is momentum, as you know, and right now it's my feeling the Redskins have a lot more momentum than the Packers do. ... I think the Redskins might have more speed than the Packers, espe- cially in the receivers. When you get to a playoff game you'd better have all your weapons ready." Long, 74, grew up near Pittsburgh, Pa., and said his goal as a youth was to avoid winding up in a steel mill like his father or a coal mine like his grandfather. He got a scholarship to play basket- ball as a point guard at Wichita State and played on the hardwood all four years. He was invited to try out for the football team there after assistant basket- ball coaches saw him play. After one year on the grid- iron, he was drafted in the fourth round by the Packers ahead of the 1964 season. He also was drafted by the San Diego Chargers of the AFL before the leagues merged, but chose Green Bay.
