Basketball gears up to play Chico High Jv Soccer work to improve for Shasta The Red Bluff Varsity Boys basketball teams is now well into their 2015-2016 Basketball season. They have an overall record some of the big strengths they possess, is their speed and their overall shooting ability. "We're a really quick team," said Eric Spencer, Junior. The team has participated in four tournament this season and in three of the four took home 3 rd place, and in their fourth took home 5 th place. This years the varsity boys' basketball team is being coached by Pablo Vazquez who is head coach, and Patrick Cleary who is assistant coach. "They're really energetic coaches at practice and they do a good job coaching us as well as keeping us focused," said Spencer. The team's toughest competitors so far this season have been Pleasant Valley High School and Enterprise High School. The boys feel that Pleasant Valley is their toughest competitor, "Because they execute their plays well and they are a really athletic team", said Spencer. Pleasant Valley is a tough competitor, because "They're big and athletic," responded Lane Pritchard, senior. Even with the record they have, the team remains optimistic for the remainder of the games they have. "We can only improve from where we are," said Eric Spencer, junior. "We're getting better, we're improving a lot, we're moving the ball and have better defense," said Lane Pritchard, senior. The team's next game is next Tuesday against Chico High School. This is an away game, that will be taking place at Chico High School at 7:30. of five wins and eleven losses and a league record of zero wins and five losses. With that said, the team feels that they must improve on their defense and executing their plays. Even with those weaknesses the team feels as though that Lexi Pritchard Sports Editor The 2015-2016 Red Bluff High School alpine team coached by Bill Treat and Mary Treat has started out with a bang this year against the Mount Shasta, and Enterprise. With the plentiful snow this year, the odds are finally in the alpines team favor. The boys started out with a huge win getting first place out of the four teams. Sophomore Brandon Bronze said he did good getting a combined total of 2:45.65 for his first race of his first year. "The good thing about the snow this year is that we are able to practice a lot more," said Brandon. What Brandon thinks he needs to work on is his turning. Sophomore Mariah Damante who has been on alpine for two years said she did really good and didn't crash once getting a combined total of 1:57.31. "There is a lot more snow this year, so we can actually practice a lot more," said Mariah. Maiah believes she doesn't need to work on anything because she is fabulous. Senior Isaac Moldenhauer who has been on alpine for all four years said he didn't do the best he could've done getting a combined total of 1:41.41. "You can actually train now with the amount of snow this year," said Isaac. Isaac thinks he needs to work on not falling. Junior Connor Sousa who has been on alpine for three years said he did really good getting a combined total of 1:37.37 and took 3 rd in league. "I am finally able to train five days a week now with this snowfall," said Connor. What Connor believes he needs to work on is going fast and his technique. The alpine team will race again at Mount Shasta against the same competitors next Monday. The Red Bluff High School Freshman girls basketball season has just taken off under the instruction of their head coach, Chris Sinclair. When asking freshman girls basketball player Alexis Zamora how their season is going so far, Zamora responded with "Our season is going a lot better than I originally thought because in the beginning, we would not cooperate with each other and it was just chaos. In the end we came together and picked ourselves up. "Zamora is playing on the freshman team in hopes of pursuing her dreams of playing basketball and in her later years to soon make the Varsity girls basketball team. The team has recently played in tournament in Palo Cedro, at Foothill High School. The Lady Spartans took second place in the whole thing. Their first game in the Foothill Tournament was a success against Chico and so was the second game against Shasta. But at the end of the day, they had one more game against Foothill and they lost, ending their tournament with second place. When asking Zamora what they Frosh G. The Junior Varsity boys soccer team are having a difficult time because the boys don't have as many defenders as they did last year. When asked, what are some of the strategies you guys use throughout the games, G e r a r d o P a r r a sophomore replied, " W e a l w a y s h a v e possession of the ball and we are really con sist ent i n defending the goal." The Red Bluff High School Junior Varsity boys are preparing for their upcoming games by doing lot of drills consisting of defensive and offensive players. When asked what are some of the things that you want to accomplish this season, Gerardo Parra replied with, "Some of the things that the team wants to accomplish this season is to improve on our skills from where we were last year and have a better season." When asked what the team needs to work on, Gerardo Parra replied, "Some of our weaknesses are that are mid fielders struggle getting the ball down the field to score a goal." One of Red Bluff High Schools Junior Varsity boy's team's biggest competitor is Shasta. When asked Trenton Houghtby sophomore team captain what strategies are you going to use to try and beat Shasta, Houghtby replied " W e need more d e f e n s i v e p l a y e r s and Shasta u s u a l l y a l w a y s gets the first goal so if we can score b e f o r e them we will have a better chance in winning." The team captain is Trenton Houghtby. Some of the extra responsibilities Trenton Houghtby has as a team captain is that he has to help start the warm ups and if the coach isn't there then he runs the practice. On the court I can tell some players play favorites with others; we need to be able to trust each other. Also, we need to work on keeping a positive attitude during a loss." Freshman basketball player Taylor McKarras responded with "I think it was a pretty good tourney because we all had improved since the season started and since our first game." McKarras' best friend Kennady Sandow agreed with McKarass and Zamora and said, "I can see improvement since our very first practice till now and I know that we will keep on improving till the season comes to its end. Spartan's Coach of the Issue Kenny Button: Freshmen Boys Basketball This edition's Coach of the Issue is Kenny Button, who is the Freshmen boys' basketball coach. He has been coaching for three years at Red Bluff High School. This year's team is doing well even with the struggles that they have endured, but they have shown growth by improving their teamwork during their games. Mr. Button is always motivating the boys to stay positive and to have perseverance when they are out on the court playing. In addition to basketball, he has also coached baseball and girls tennis.
