This carving set was a wedding gift to my par- ents in 1928 and was used mainly on holidays. Any information would be appreciated. — H.S., Brookfield A. Sterling silver embel- lishment and the length of these carving implements exemplify extravagance and certainly did make a beauti- ful wedding present. The oversized 17-inch knife for carving might have worked in 1928, but not for the small-portioned hams sold today. By flipping down the finger-guard on the fork it doubles as a stand. The embossed name of "Lee's" on the steel sharpener indi- cates it was made from a Connecticut firm that man- ufactured some of the finest butchery cutlery and presentation sets in Ameri- ca. The label on the flannel storage bag identified that it was sold through the Richard Seidel Shop, an established jeweler in Mil- waukee from 1877 into the 1930s. Older antler-horn sets like this example currently have extremely low demand, especially if the knife has a worn-thin blade. Similar sets with decora- tive silver have sold recently for under $50. Your family tradition of using the set for holidays gives a sentimental value that cannot be mea- sured. Q. We enjoy your arti- cles and would appreciate any information on our antique cast-iron furniture. — E.M., Delafield A. From 1850-1890 this bench design was cast by numerous American foundries. Most of them ignored the fact that some- one else held the patent. Cast-iron furniture with duplicated carved designs was used in city parks, pri- vate and public gardens, cemeteries and conservato- ries. The weight ensured it would not blow away in a wind storm but the there was a downside — it was very uncomfortable! The Victorians loved both conspicuous and romantic cast-iron furniture includ- ing plant stands, hat racks, tables, urns, and more. Pat- terns showed a large amount of surprisingly deli- cate detail for such a rugged material. Curled designs of botanical leafage would cover surfaces with lace-like garlands and scrolls. The ornate latticework did have one archenemy: rust — breakage through painted surfaces would soon bring corrosion. A very high per- centage of these cast-iron pieces, including cannons, church bells, gates and fences were recycled for World War II efforts. The weight, layers of repainting and the design is proof of age on this Gothic- Rococo Revival settee. The design is timeless — this pattern has become known as the, "White House Rose Garden Bench" because Jackie Kennedy purchased a replica to display in the White House Rose Garden. Antique cast-iron furniture has lost favor and values have dropped drastically. Sandblasting is often cost prohibitive — only then would one see the degree of rust damage and perhaps find an impressed foundry mark that could boost the value. Today antique garden benches average $200 and a single chair about $100.
