Plunging into the New Year By Karen Pilarski Freeman Staff SUMMIT — On New Year's Day, many adults take advan- tage of sleeping in after the previous night's festivities. This wasn't the case for a mass of energetic people at Panga Bar and Grill, 34422 Delafield Road. Stolley's Hogg Alley and Panga Bar sponsored the 2016 Lake County Polar Plunge on the channel located on the south end of Upper Nemahbin Lake. On Friday it was a sunny yet frigid 26 degrees outside. A brisk wind dropped the wind chill to 14 degrees. Yet hearty Wisconsinites stripped down to colorful swim wear and took a dip for a great cause. This year pro- ceeds from the plunge benefit research and treatment for the nerve disorder amy- otrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The participants who made a donation to jump received a Panga Bar T-shirt. Sarah Arendt has been doing the plunge for 4 years. "It brings this whole area together. It is fun and every- one loves it, we know how to have fun," she said. While it felt frigid outside Friday afternoon, Arendt's coldest year was diving in at 11 degrees. Her mother Jill Arendt has participated for 2 years. It was her daughter who encouraged her to do it. It took liquid courage and the support of family and friends for Jill to dive in. The real inspiration is hav- ing loved ones affected by ALS. "We lost a friend several years ago who succumbed to the disease. It is very hard to watch," Jill said. Plunge 101 Panga Bar manager There- sa Krahn has been involved in the plunge for 4 years. She said there was 30-40 partici- pants registered but many people show up at the last minute. Her advice to novice jumpers is simple. "Get in, get out and run quickly to the heated boat house," she said. Krahn joked that to pre- pare, you might want a quick drink of an adult beverage or a sip of the free coffee and hot chocolate. It appeared there were ample amounts of advice being dispensed among the crowd. "Don't jump in, it is not that deep. Have towels ready, you want to take off the wet clothes right away," said Andrea Pendowski. This was her second year; she jumped last year for her friend who was pregnant. This year's plunge is dedicated to her 15- year-old son Gavin, who has a seizure disorder. Gretchen Bachman and her best friend Jordan Fuller are competitive swimmers, but were first- time Polar Plungers. "I'm concerned about the shock when I get in the water," Bachman said. "I never expected to do it, I was told last night that I was going to do it," said Fuller. 13-year-old Leah Guse was inspired by her aunt, Peggy Olson. "I'm looking forward to and scared of jumping in," she said. Olson, a 4-year par- ticipant, talked her niece into it. "I told her how awesome it is. I feel rejuvenated after- wards," Peggy Olson said. Theresa Kinley was a first- timer and from her enthusi- asm, it won't be the last time. "This is going to be fun," she said. A group of people in shorts and swimsuits jumped up and down to keep warm. Shortly before the scheduled 2 p.m. plunge time, Kinley leaped in before anyone else.
