While some question the utility of the $400 mil- lion littoral combat ship built in Marinette, its defenders in the military say the utility of the high- ly maneuverable 40-foot craft with a shallow draft is essential for costal, or littoral, missions. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat and a strong supporter of the LCS pro- gram, said it created 2,000 direct jobs in the state alone and 93 Wisconsin companies supplied part s to build the ships, which number three, at Marinette Marine. The project united state politicians on both sides of the aisle. Republican Gov. Scott Walker said in a statement for the ceremony, "This is the fifth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name Milwaukee, but the first USS Milwaukee to be built in our great state." The first dated back to the Civil War. Mayor Tom Barrett called it a wonderful day for the city, Navy and nation. Also attending the cere- mony were the 54 crew members assigned to the ship, which is headed to her home port in San Diego. With 6.1 inches of snow falling Saturday, the ship and its crew wore a coat of white. Commander Ken Bridgewater thanked the people of Milwaukee for their support and interest. "Your warmth and hos- pitality will be carried onboard for as long as she sails in support of free- dom around the world," he said after the ceremony. The third ship in the Freedom variation, it can handle a variety of mis- sion packages, for which it must be refitted on shore. About 23 assignment-spe- cific sailors and equip- ment can handle surface, anti-submarine or mine countermeasures warfare as well as take on an avia- tion detachment with a Seahawk helicopter.
