He is a senior writer and columnist for ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com, a 2011 and 2010 nomine, and the 2009 winner of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation award for online journalism. He is a contributor to ESPN's Sports Center, Outside the Lines and ESPN First Take . This former Detroit gang member rose to be selected a Hechinger Fellow at Columbia University and has become one of the most visible openly gay men working in sports today. In his commentary, LZ has tackled taboo subjects such as use of the N-word in the black community, the presence of gays in the locker room, and the truths and lies of reverse racism. He won a 2009 GLAAD award in online journalism, and his op-ed piece on CNN.com, "Gay is not the new black" ignited a national conversation on race, and sexuality.
