"Feed & Pet Supply Stores" 246913005 By Chris Bucher Freeman Staff WALES — All Kettle Moraine senior Drew Winkoski needed was his time to shine. Once he finally got it, the for- ward made the most of it. With leading goal scorer Jake White being forced out due to injury in the second round of last year's WIAA boys soccer tournament, Winkoski got the nod and attempted to fill the void White's exit left. "After that (injury), Drew took over and ended up scoring a bunch of goals as a result," Kettle Moraine coach Greg Prospero said. "He's always been a goal scorer, but he wait- ed his turn." Winkoski said while it was a disappointing how it worked out, he thrived in the role and enjoyed the added pressure. "I was really excited to get a chance to play up top, to be counted on and have a lot of weight on me," Winkoski said. "I was very disappointed that Jake got injured, but I really felt I was capable of taking the role and be depended on." When the current season started in August, Winkoski said he was overjoyed and wanted to show what he's capa- ble of doing. "I wasn't nervous at all. I was excited to take the role," Winkoski said. "I've been wait- ing for it, I was ready." Prospero said Winkoski deserves the current spot that he's in for how hard he's worked to improve himself as a player. "He's been a coach's dream," Prosperso said. "He's very quiet and humble and is very attentive and is always willing to learn and listen." "When he finally got his time, he worked really hard to make good decisions and understand his role. That's about all you can ask for as a coach." Even though Kettle Moraine would have hoped for a better record than the 6-11-2 mark they boast, Winkoski said they have lear ned a significant amount from each game. "We expected to do a little bit better, but we've had a lot of new players gaining experi- ence," Winkoski said. "That comes with bumps and is to be expected. I think the record is just an obstacle." Winkoski leads Kettle Moraine and the Classic 8 Con- ference with 17 goals. He leads his team with six assists and 40 points. "I'm confident in my abili- ties," Winkoski said. "But mostly I like to go out there, have fun and just play. I love the game. Scoring and all of the other stuff is what I want to do, but not the main thing. But when it happens, I'm happy." Like Prospero said, Winkoski is a product of hard work. And that work began with the other team captains almost immedi- ately following the end of last season. Winkoski and the three other senior captains began training for the 2015 season and worked to help young teammates become incorporat- ed with Kettle Moraine's sys- tem. "I've always believed that you go as far as your seniors," Prospero said. "Drew isn't the kind of guy that calls you up and brings you into practice, he's the guy that shows up to practice early, sets the tone and leads by example." Winkoski said the workouts were important in not just fine tuning skills, but also learning valuable leadership lessons and building a team chemistry. "Starting last winter on Thursdays, Mark (Bayer) Tay- lor (Sullivan) and I got some groups of people out to work on foot skills," Winkoski said. "We usually held two sessions. Everyone worked really hard. "We came into the season with a lot more camaraderie. We came in being able to play well together. We each knew how one another played and we came in ready." With the regular season com- plete and Kettle Moraine set to travel to Badger on Thursday in the WIAA Regional round, Winkoski said he couldn't have picked a better group to work with all season long. "I've loved being a leader for this team," Winkoski said. "It's been a lot of fun, there's been a lot of good kids and they're all fun to lead." Following graduation in the spring, Winkoski plans to study either math or science in college and intends on playing soccer. He said his main choic- es of schools are between St. Thomas (Minn.) and Temple University. Email: cbucher@conleynet.com Winkoski gets time to shine for KM Get to know ...
