Ray is a master-restorer of antique furniture. Rose was an artist, poet, and writer of short stories. While living in Point Pleasant Beach in the 1950s, she painted with Oona O'Neill Chaplin (the fourth and last wife of filmmaker Charlie Chaplin and daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill and writer Agnes Boulton). Rose sent this prayer to President Eisenhower in October 1959. She received a response 1 , and it is believed that it was read on Thanksgiving at The White House. It reflects another time and another place, but will still resonate for many today. On This Thanksgiving Day Let us give thanks for the Lord's protection, And take Him by the hand. Let us give thanks for many favors, No matter how small or grand. Let us give thanks for the many churches In which we may worship as we choose. Let us give thanks to Him on high For the Bibles we peruse. Let us give thanks just for being alive, In a great country that is free. Let us give thanks for our blessings And pray for those overseas. Let us give thanks for our friendly neighbors Who will heed our beck and call. Let us give thanks for a land of riches Which has bountiful crops for all. Let us give thanks for many things As we go on our merry way. But most of all let us give thanks to the Lord For giving us this day! —Liz Moglia 1 October 14, 1959, from The White House, Washington. The Assistant To The President. Dear Mrs. Moglia: The President has received your letter of October second and has asked me to thank you for sending a copy of your Thanksgiving prayer. He wants you to know that it is most helpful to him in meeting the great responsibilities of his office to know that many citizens throughout the Nation are remembering him in prayer. With the President's best wishes, Sincerely yours, Wilton B. Persons
