The Varsity Volleyball team isn't your average Junior and Senior girls team, but instead the line- up varies in a diversity of grades from Sophomores to Seniors as the youngest girls were called up from the Junior Varsity team. After enduring a challenging season last year, Senior Varsity player Christina Zumalt, who has been participating in the sport for six years now, shares her experiences about last season and what her hopes are for the upcoming year. "The Varsity Volleyball team only won two games last year.", explains Christina, "this year it's a whole new setting with new girls and a new coach." Coach Kelli Mustaine is sure to change their overall performance by pushing them harder in their practices that consist of intense conditioning and an extended period of morning and evening practices. Christina adds on as she discusses about how working out a lot at practice has helped the team improve physically therefore they are able to change their playing methods for the better. "The girls are committed and ready to win." Christina comments that the team has been focusing on team bonding because "everyone is going to be better working as a team." Although the age varies throughout the team, Zumalt is pleased to say that "There is no negativity amongst the players, everyone is super positive and we all just really care about each other." With a new coach to lead the Varsity team and the experienced players, Christina is sure that this season will be much better than it has been in the past. The Girls Varsity Golf team is looking forward to this season and is coached by Elena Tomasetti. When asked about the team's goals for this year, Abbie Fambrough, senior, said, "To travel to the big tournaments and to get first in league, and to go to Norcal as a team again." Fambrough then added, "There's a lot of potential this season and more goals that are being set." Autumn Poole, senior, who has playing since the age of eight said, "Our practices consist of going out to the driving range at Wilcox golf Course, playing a few holes, and some putting." When asked about what Poole enjoys while playing golf she said, "To hit a good tee shot is the best feeling in the world." Senior Shelby Carver has been playing since she was the age of five thinks she can improve on becoming a better golfer under pressure. Carver said, "We are like a family. We are all super close." The girls on the team are very optimistic for this season and are excited to see how it will play out. The Red Bluff High School freshman football team is looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to West Valley High School last Thursday night, losing 34-0. The game was marred by confusion as to when and where it would be played. The team, led by four year head coach Ty Minto, is look- ing to continue to improve in weaker areas, with several players, including Wesley Ro- cha, a second year wide re- ceiver, cornerback and defen- sive end, who says, "It's important to pay atten- tion in practice and to improve every week." This sentiment of always bettering yourself is not lost here, as up and down the ros- ter, players look to put the loss behind them and move for- ward. Izak Beltran, a first year defensive lineman, said he's focused on winning one week at a time. Last night's game against Shasta was a big test before next week's game against Corning, which the players know is one of their biggest games of the season. The shootout always car- ries a little more weight than a regular season game, as Brin- din Hethcoat, an eighth year inside linebacker, says, "The Corning game has al- ways been a big deal, it'd be good to win to get them off of our chest and demolish them." Starting their high school careers out with a win versus Corning High School is al- ways a good way to get things in gear and have confidence on your side. This is well known to Joseph Morgan, a third year Wide Receiver who's looking forward to this game more than any other this year and is preparing by being more focused and pay- ing more attention during practice to keep getting better as a team. With a group of players that likes to deliver big hits, such as Beltran, who looks forward to hitting more than any other part of the game. Combined with Morgan, who enjoys trucking opposing defenses, this is an aggressive line-up that's looking forward to winning. Rocha and his teammates The 2015 Red Bluff High Swim Team continued its season last Wednesday against Sutter and the host school Paradise, in which they looked to build off of a strong performance the previous meet at West Valley. This team is incredibly unique because many of the athletes have been swimming competitively for years before high school, including the holder of six of the eight Varsity Girls records, Julia Brandt, a junior who has been swimming for eleven years. She's looking forward to this year because, "we have already started to bond as a team and each meet we'll get better and better." She hopes to win an event during the Masters this year, their section championships event. On top of being one of the most experienced swimmers on the team, she holds the records for the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 breast, 100 f ly, 50 freestyle and the 200 IM. IM is individual medley, where a swimmer goes through four different strokes, the backstroke, breaststroke, butterf ly and freestyle, in order. Another experienced member of the team who likes their chemistry is Ellie Fletcher, a junior whose favorite event is the 200 IM. She has been also been swimming for 11 years, and likes how the team is always competitive and how well they can come together as a group. She wants to keep improving every race and beat her times. On the guy's side of things, Mitchell Sauve, the sole senior on the team, likes all the events but his favorite is the 100 breaststroke. He has been swimming for eight years and is looking forward to going to the Masters because they have a senior tribute during the meet. Noah Caylor, another junior, is relatively new to the sport with four years of racing experience and he wants to have a fun year while continuing to get better. His favorite part of the team is how supportive the environment is and that everyone there is like a close knit group of friends. They are a group that has been swimming together for most of their lives, as members of the SOAR team and then moving on together at the high school level now. This group will be competing at the Masters Section Championship on Saturday October 31st. As the team moves forward throughout the season, they have a bright outlook on the future, knowing that next season they return almost all of the team next year.
