Página 12 Big companies knock at his door along with the government and nonprofit organizations. They want to work with him. Not just because José Maldonado is a good person or because he is a certified minority contractor. There are many of those. It is not a matter of luck, either. He is sought after because of the outstan- ding reputation of Old Veteran Construction, Inc., the company he founded 30 years ago with a $200 job building a chimney and which now expects to have a turnover of more than $200 million in various projects this year. Anyone who takes a look at his company's history over the past three decades can understand why OVC was also chosen as a minority contractor to carry out one of the most attractive cons- truction projects in the city: a Marriott hotel and a sports complex for DePaul University, recently started next to McCormick Place with a total cost of $635 million. Of Puerto Rican origin, raised in the so-called low income pro- jects on the south side of Chicago in a humble family, Maldonado speaks in an interview with Negocios Now about the circumstan- ces in which he founded his company, its growth and forecasts, about his parents and the worth of his people, without which,he insists, Old Veteran Construction could not be what it is today.
