Barbara Eash antiques column Page 5 "I'm 94 years old and just can't do everything any more like I used to," said Millie, who has been a Comfort Keepers client since July 2013 and has lived in Harbour Village in Greendale for over a dozen years. Millie enjoys and looks forward to the 3-4 weekly visits she gets from her special Caregiver Charlene. Charlene keeps her independent so she can enjoy life in her own home. "Charlene helps me with my shoes and socks, she helps me get in and out of the shower, she helps me do some laundry and overall she's just very pleasant to be with," said Millie. "Every time we talk, I learn the most fascinating things about her," added Charlene. Millie has a son living in Ohio who is unable to travel and daughter Judy living in New York that she sees only four times a year, so Charlene "is like my mom's adopted daughter" and she is almost like a sister to me, added Judy. Charlene often takes Millie to a local drug store, grocery shopping, to run errands and out for lunch at her favorite restaurant. "I actually sit in the motorized cart driving in the store and tell Charlene what I want and she picks it out and puts it in my basket," said Millie. "It's actually sort of fun." "I've enjoyed this period of my life, by myself, with the help of Comfort Keepers, better than any other period of my life," said Millie "I'm not really sure what I'd do without Comfort Keepers." Why Comfort Keepers? Comfort Keepers' creed "to treat each and every client as if they are a family member," best matched local Comfort Keeper's franchise owner Shar Meller's own philosophy and Christian values. Exercising can improve quality of life at any age By Chris Bennett Special to The Freeman BROOKFIELD — You are never too old for exercise, and exercise for the elderly comes with a multitude of health benefits. "We've seen people get off of, or at least reduce, blood pressure medication or dia- betes medication," said Lisa Glenn, recre- ation supervisor with Brookfield's Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department. "We've seen people that are maybe in the early stages of Alzheimer's or other kinds of dementia keep their physical condi- tion." Glenn supervises exercise classes as part of her responsibilities with the Brookfield Senior Center, 2000 N. Calhoun Road in Brookfield. It is also the site of Brookfield's City Hall. The center offers senior citizen exercise classes from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Tues- days and Thursdays, and started doing so in current form in 2007. The classes are offered in partnership with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. "There's probably, right now, four or five women who come here that lead the class and now have over 100 people signed up," Glenn said. "It's been going great." The class is free for members of the Senior Center. Senior Center membership is free for city of Brookfield residents and $12 per year for nonresidents. "It's a very, very full room, and it is still mainly chair-based," Glenn said. "They do some exercises where they're out of the chair." Benefits numerous Getting off of medications is but one of several positive outcomes of exercising at an advanced age. "In general, evidence is showing that exercise reduces many negative effects of chronic conditions," said Lee Clay, R.N., and community health education coordi- nator with the Waukesha County Aging and Disability Resource Center. "It has many positive effects on our body, and it should not stop as we get older." Please call 262-542-2500 for home delivery.
