Just a few years ago, chil- dren traversed the curving hallways and played in the sprawling fields of the circu- lar school. But after Glen Park closed in 2012, the hallways and fields lay deserted. Once the vibrant centerpiece of the neighborhood, the aban- doned building became a cause for worry, according to many in the community. Heritage Christian Schools bought the building from the New Berlin School District in 2014, and they plan to open there this fall for students in grades 7-12. Heritage Christian Presi- dent John Davis has big dreams for the building's future. Eventually, he said, all the students from pre-kinder- garten to 12th grade will be housed under the former Glen Park's roof. Currently, Heritage Chris- tian's preschool through sec- ond-grade students attend its facility at Weatherstone Church, 1500 S. West Lane in New Berlin. Its third- through sixth-graders attend its facility at the former St. Luke School, 1305 Davidson Road in Brookfield. Seventh- through 12-grade students attend Heritage Christian at the former Pleasant Hill School, 175 S. Barker Road in Brookfield. According to building plans on New Berlin's web- site, a yet-to-be-funded addi- tional wing at the former Glen Park would potentially provide the additional space for the school to fully consoli- date its operations. Davis explained, however, he found it imperative that Heritage Christian staff inte- grate themselves into the community before their move and ahead of any changes the school wanted to make. "We hosted three meetings with our neighbors," he said. "We were like, 'how can we work with you guys?'" Davis said the meetings, the most recent of which was in June, provided a chance for Heritage Christian to hear and respond to neigh- bors' concerns, as well as to inform them of the school's plans. The biggest worries for neighbors? Increased traffic in the quiet neighborhood and ongoing bothersome con- struction — both of which Heritage Christian has pledged to minimize as best it can. Despite the concerns, Davis said the community reaction to the private school moving into the neighborhood has been overwhelmingly posi- tive. "I've had people come to me, some with tears in their eyes, saying that they loved so much... that it would be a school again and kids would be playing outside," he said. A May 2014 vote by the elec- torate to approve the sale of Glen Park to Heritage Chris- tian passed 66 to 11. Since then, Heritage Christian has "made an effort to be very upfront" with the surround- ing community, said Busi- ness Administrator Brad Evans. 'It means a lot to us to be good neighbors' Before Christmas, Heritage Christian members planned to sing carols in the former Glen Park neighborhood but had to cancel due to rain. The next day, however, Davis himself knocked on the neighbors' doors, intro- duced himself, answered questions, and gave the fami- lies Christmas cards and gifts. In April, the girls of Her- itage Christian's senior class prepared and distributed more gift bags to the nearby households. "It means a lot to us to be good neighbors," Davis said. The community, he believes, finds it "refreshing" that Heritage Christian is reaching out after the mas- sive uncertainty of the aban- doned elementary school's future. Its now-certain future fea- tures seventh- through 12th- graders, some fresh coats of paint, a bit of landscaping by the entrance, new lockers, and revamped administra- tive offices. In addition to the middle and high schools moving locations, the 3rd through 6th graders will join the younger elementary school students at the Weatherstone Church location in the fall. The building that has, up until now, been rented by the Heritage Christian middle and high schools has a new tenant. The former Pleasant Hill School will now house The Richardson School, a thera- peutic day school for students with developmental or neuro- logical disabilities and behav- ioral or emotional issues. For more information about Heritage Christian Schools, go to heritagechris- tianschools.org. Charles Auer/Freeman Staff John Davis talks about plans for the library at Heritage Chris- tian School's new facility in the former Glen Park School in New Berlin. He hopes to restore a wall of windows that had been replaced with insulated panels in the past.
