BROOKFIELD — The Waukesha County Community Foundation celebrated 15 years of charitable giving with an event at Westmoor Country Club on June 10. Nearly 200 guests were able to network and mingle during a social hour that was followed by a brief program. Bryce Styza and Peter Lettenberger were both recog- nized for their philanthropic vision and leadership in Waukesha County. During the past 15 years, the Waukesha County Community Foundation has awarded more than $17 million in grants to charitable organizations in the community. Mike Hammes said his family's Brookfield development company saw the value in The Bog because it is well designed and has a great layout. "Having a name like Ar nold Palmer attached to the course is exciting in its own right," Hammes said. Created in 1995, The Bog facility includes a public 18-hole, par 72, championship layout which is playable from 5,110 to 7,221 yards, according to its website. Hammes said The Bog is the first golf course that Hammes Compa- ny owns and it will be working with KemperSports, a golf course management firm based in North- brook, Ill. Hammes Company closed on the sale July 2 and plans to maintain the status quo at the 297-acre golf course for the time being. "We are going to see how the year plays out and make decisions as we go on," Hammes said. KemperSports spent a couple days on site since the purchase and is assessing the facility, he said. www.golfthebog.com www.hammesco.com — Katherine Michalets, Freeman Staff By Matt Masterson Freeman Staff PEWAUKEE — Dozens of residents attended a public information meeting recent- ly to discuss possible future improvements to a major thoroughfare in Pewaukee. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation had been studying a six-mile stretch of Capitol Drive, beginning in Pewaukee and extending east to Brookfield Road, to address the long-term needs for the corridor. The department's pre- ferred development at the site would feature a new "echelon" type intersection that could help increase effi- ciency while cutting down traffic accidents. WisDOT Project Manager Debra Tarnow said the meet- ing — the third such for this project — drew about 50 par- ticipants. "It was a good meeting, we had a lot of good turnout and we received a lot of good pub- lic input on the (study)," said WisDOT Regional Communi- cations Manager Brian DeN- eve. The study originally began back in 2008 and is scheduled to be completed this year. Previous public meetings were held in 2011 and 2009. WisDOT will continue to accept public comments as part of its official record for the next two weeks. Follow- ing that, the department would consider possible long- term plans and possibly enact an actual design pro- ject, though when that may occur remains unclear at this point. No construction would begin until traffic volumes in the area warrant changes being made. In an email to The Free- man, DeNeve said the eche- lon interchange is designed to accommodate two high- volume streets. It is among the latest engineering tech- nology and techniques that give WisDOT more options than simply adding lanes. If constructed, it could be the first of its kind in Wis- consin, though echelon inter- sections are being considered at other projects statewide. Such an interchange not only cuts down the ways an accident can occur — from 32 on a conventional intersec- tion to 14 — it also accommo- dates more traffic than con- ventional designs, according to department documents. DeNeve noted the echelon's efficiency of movement, as the two-tiered flow allows dif- ferent directions of traffic to move without intersecting each other. "It actually has a smaller footprint than a lot of your standard interchanges," DeNeve said, "so it's good in urban areas like Capitol Drive and Highway 164 there so we don't have to encroach too much on the adjacent real estate, businesses or homes."
