By Katherine Michalets Freeman Staff BROOKFIELD — Large earth-moving equipment motored around in the back- ground on a recent after- noon while developers and local dignitaries gathered to hold a ceremonial ground- breaking at the future site of The Corridor at Bluemound and Calhoun roads. Waukesha County Execu- tive Paul Farrow said he was pleased to see that the for- mer corn fields had been turned into a vast amount of brown dirt when he drove past it on Interstate 94. But turning to the develop- ers of the mixed-use project — Dave Arnold, executive vice president at Irgens, and Mark Irgens, owner — Far- row said there was some- thing lacking in the plans. "There is one thing miss- ing for me. I don't know if you can still fit it in here, Dave, but an arena," Farrow joked about the future Bucks arena. What the project on 66 acres formerly home to Ruby Farm will include is retail, restaurants, a hotel, fitness and wellness facilities and office space. The Shoppes at The Corri- dor will have more than 130,000 square feet of retail space and will be anchored by Dick's Sporting Goods. The Corridor Corporate & Technology Park will have the first "Class A" suburban office space added in the western suburbs of Milwau- kee in more than 10 years. The yellow Ruby Farm house and barn will be repurposed and made avail- able for public entities. There will also be seven acres of land in the Deer Creek environmental corri- dor to Brookfield for a wet- land dedication program and creating a walking trail and sidewalks. The anticipated value of the fully developed project is $142 million with a potential property tax impact of more than $2 million and possibly more than $300,000 in hotel room tax. Irgens said his company aims to develop projects that are innovative, creative and create value. About 500 con- struction jobs will be gener- ated and more than 3,000 permanent jobs are antici- pated once The Corridor is fully developed. Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto said The Corridor will likely be the most signifi- cant development during his tenure. He called the former Ruby Farm land the "the most desirable undeveloped prop- erty in metro Milwaukee, and I believe in Wisconsin." "I have a personal commit- ment to this being a truly exceptional development," he said. Farrow said the develop- ment helped signify to other companies that Waukesha County is a great place to be located and elected officials are wanting to work with them. www.irgens.com Email: kmichalets@conleynet.com Page 2 • Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove 262-542-2500 Hours: M-F 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. 801 N.
