Call I t's been 10 years since Fred and Sandy Bowers moved from a house in West Bend to a condo- minium in Kewaskum. They left behind their yard, but not their love of flowers. So the Bowers found a way to add plants and flowers to their yard and upper deck without breaking any condo asso- ciation rules. The couple turned to pot- ted plants. The strip along the garage, which contains a few asso- ciation-owned planted shrubs, was a relatively easy conversion project for the Bowers. They turned to planters and pots that they fill with a variety of annuals each year. The deck of their upper unit posed more of a chal- lenge, mainly because they struggled to find brackets that fit over the railing. "We collect them whenev- er we see them," Sandy said. "Some are old, some are newer. They are harder to find than you'd think so we are happy to have as many as we do." Hanging baskets of ferns and other potted plants round out the collection. The result is an eye-catch- ing splash of color easily seen by anyone who enters the Whispering Willow condominium complex. Neighbors say the flowers brighten their days, a compliment that the Bowers truly enjoy. "We love to hear that peo- ple enjoy our flowers as much as we do," Sandy said. The Bowers share the work of their floral display. Sandy picks out the flow- ers and tells Fred where she wants them; he puts them into place and waters them. "You know what they say," Fred says with a laugh. "If the wife is happy, everyone is happy!" Fred spends about an hour each day tending to the flowers, splitting his time evenly between the deck and the garage. It requires some effort, but it's enjoy- able, he said. Sandy's strategy for decid- ing which flowers to add to her collection is based on color. "I love pinks and purples," she said, "so we have a lot Gone Gardening Gone Gardening Continued on page 17.
