It's August in harrisburg, and you know what
that means.
everything goes quiet.
Lawmakers flee back home, lobbyists and
lawyers hit the beach, and just enough state
workers show up to keep the lights on.
even City Council shuts off its noise machine,
as it doesn't reconvene from summer break
until the final week of the month.
except for the occasional rumble of a
pontoon boat or roar of a mini-bike, you
might forget you were in the middle of a
typically noisy city.
That's where TheBurg comes in, to keep
things regular-like. your summer world may
feel topsy-turvy, but we're here to show that,
despite that tomato and peach coma you've
eaten yourself into, some things around here
continue to operate on a semi-normal basis.
That said: We bow to your languid summer
sensibility with numerous stories appropriate
for the rapidly aging season. So, join us on
a hike along the Appalachian Trail, on an
outing for some cool PA wines and for some
great new eats at the Broad Street Market.
August, of course, also means gearing up for
the coming school year, so we feature stories
on traditional and some very non-traditional
ways of learning in our special focus
on education.
As always, please enjoy the stories that,
each month, we put in the bucket of public
interest journalism. Much of the government
may be on vacation, but our coverage of city
issues isn't.
If you're like me, you'll take advantage of
the mid-summer lull. grab the August issue
and linger awhile in the relative quiet at
an outside table at Cornerstone, the beer
garden at Millworks, the courtyard at hMAC.
And, yes, feel free to slurp your way through
one more peach.
