By Katherine Michalets Freeman Staff HARTLAND — The future con- tinues to glow brightly for Hart- land-based Batteries Plus Bulbs, which announced Tuesday Forbes named it one of the best American franchises to buy due to its contin- uous store expansion and sales growth. In 2014, Batteries Plus Bulbs opened 42 new store locations nationwide and saw a system-wide sales increase of 8.6 percent — including a 74 percent increase in overall light bulb sales, according to the announcement. The grow- ing battery, light bulb and smart- phone and tablet repair franchise now has more than 650 locations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. During the past five years, Bat- teries Plus Bulbs had a 12 percent growth rate and 97 percent fran- chise continuity, according to the company. It has therefore been ranked No. 8 in Forbes' mid-range investment category, where fran- chise investments range from $150,001 to $500,000. "We're honored to be recognized among Forbes' list of best per- forming franchises in America for the second year running," said Russ Reynolds, CEO of Batteries Plus Bulbs, in a statement. "This is truly a testament to the endurance of our brand and underscores our commitment to evolving with industry trends while continuing to provide the tools necessary for our franchisees to be as successful as possible. With one quarter of our fran- chisees opening up more than 90 additional stores in the last three years, this further validates the outstanding franchise opportunity we offer." In 2013, Batteries Plus Bulbs opened 55 new stores and antici- pated creating about 275 to 330 jobs in 2014. Headquartered on Walnut Ridge Drive in Hartland, the 25- year-old company occupies about 15,000 square feet in an industrial park. In 2015, Batteries Plus Bulbs has plans to open 50 new locations across the country, focusing in the Northeast and southern Califor- nia. Reynolds previously told The Freeman he envisioned continued growth in franchisees, new prod- ucts and services. "We continue to look for more ways to meet customers' needs and new ways to drive revenue to the store," Reynolds said. The company continues adding innovative products and expand- ing services such as on-site repairs for iPhone, iPad and iPod Apple devices and most Samsung devices. Batteries Plus Bulbs also seeks to help U.S. military veterans own business through its Ownership with Honor program, which pro- vides more than $210,000 in finan- cial support that funds nearly 85 percent of the initial store invest- ment, according to the company. The second annual "Best and Worst Franchises to Buy, 2015," rankings were compiled from per- formance and revenue metrics analyzed by FRANdata, a research and consulting firm studying the comparative performance of fran- chise brands. FRANdata mea- sured franchise performance based on demand for the franchise brand, success of existing fran- chisees, franchisor support from the perspective of "lender friendli- ness," transparency and average investment. Batteries Plus Bulbs is owned by Roark Capital Group, an Atlanta- based private equity firm. www.batteriesplus.com/franchising Email: kmichalets@conleynet.com Page 2 • FREEMAN & ENTERPRISE LAKE COUNTRY JULY 2015 Circulation Dept.
