I was once told that a weed is just a flower out of place. My definition is any plant that interferes with the desired plant I'm trying to grow. Nonetheless we all have weeds to contend with. I don't know about you but I don't like to use any synthetic chemicals, so let's take a look at some cultural practices that help keep weeds out of the garden. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The best way to combat weeds is to provide the best growing conditions for your plants. Garden placement, soil condi- tion, proper watering, fertilizer use, etc. all have a hand in weed control. ■ Garden placement is crucial. Most gar- den plants grow best in full sun. On the other hand, weeds seem to grow anywhere. By making sure your garden is in full sun, your vegetables have a better chance of competing. ■ Soil condition and fertility are impor- tant. Weeds aren't too fussy when it comes to where they grow, but vegetables are dif- ferent. Soil condition is important. Veg- etable plants like to grow in loose soil that retains moisture without being water- logged. Here lies the problem; most of us don't have this. If only there was something we could do. Oh, there is! Compost; and the more, the better. It will improve soil condi- tion and bring your soil to life. The fertility of your soil also comes from organic matter. It's what naturally feeds your plants. ■ Proper watering and additional fertiliz- er use are also important. Doing either too much, or too little, can create stress for your plants. Water your plants on a regular basis and never let them get too dry or wet. If you need to fertilize, organic fertilizers are best. ■ Plants that are weak are the first ones to be overtaken. Keep a close eye out for any problems and address them ASAP. Plant selection is also important. Anytime you try and force a plant to grow where it's not suited to grow, you're asking for trou- ble. Again, we're trying to alleviate stress. Controlling weeds before they control your garden MICHAEL TIMM See Timm/Page 8
