"What I see happening, and it has happened over the last three decades, is that organizations adopt short-lived management fads," he said. "They say, 'What people really need is more autonomy, they need more freedom.' So we see the pendulum swing to an extreme view that this is what an organization needs. But a sense of community and belonging is lost in that." The truth is that autono- my and togetherness are not, by any means, mutu- ally exclusive. That real- ization is what's at the heart of the report Wymer and his colleagues put together. Companies need to foster the autono- my of remote work while still finding ways to use office space to support the company's culture and the connections between co-workers. "I think we're negotiat- ing our middle path," O'Neill said. "Often, as is the case with so many other issues, we need to go to the extremes before we find that. I think that's what we're seeing. It's not either we go on full-on investing in autonomy or we design for social interaction. It's both." He added: "It's as if there's a shift in con- sciousness, and it's actu- ally happening globally. The mentality is a desire to integrate the funda- mental needs of human beings with the strategic needs of organizations." It's clear our sense of place as it relates to work will continue to change. Hopefully company lead- ers will take the time to think deeply about how they bring people in and together while still giving them the freedom to be alone. Me, I'm going to just stay here in my cow pas- ture. It's relaxing, and I enjoy being among intel- lectual equals. Moo. the office ... from page 2 mean human resource offi- cers see that employees are not as tuned into their tasks as they might be. I just saw a national Workplace Options poll in which 1 in 3 American workers admitted they reg- ularly deal with their own financial matters during the work day, generally because of worries or stress and not because they're playing the market on com- pany time. It's very sad. Even though the U.S. job market – final- ly – has improved from its post-recession depths, the improvement hasn't looked like past recoveries that sig- nificantly bettered workers pay and/or job satisfaction. We know why: Part-time and contract jobs without employee ben- efits have replaced many full-time jobs. Employee raises have stagnated. Mortgages and the need to have two-income house- holds have kept many workers tied to their jobs, unable to relocate. Employee costs have risen for their employer-subsi- dized health insurance. Downsizing has reduced options for promotions or transfers. The power of unions to set wage standards has faded. Then read the headlines about soaring CEO pay and corporate profits. We could well discuss whether American workers suffer from an entitlement complex, or whether they've been left too far behind while executives and stockholders have prospered. There's truth in both conclusions. But the stunning reality is that worker unhappiness permeates workplaces, and that's not a recipe for pro- ductive, innovative, global- ly leading enterprises. Human resource practi- tioners are right to say they're challenged. But we can't just tally the prob- lems. We have to stem the employee disengagement spiral.
