Feature Story Vann Brown ArrowStar,LLC As President of ArrowStar,LLC, Vann Brown leads the company in developing advanced chemical technologies and concepts that deliver tangible, environmentally responsible, market-focused solutions for the floor covering industry. Vann has over 20 years experience in research management with multi-national, technology-based durable goods & chemical companies. Prior to his present position, he served as Vice President of Innovation &Technology at Mohawk Industries where he directed the company's research &development, environmental services, and sustainabilityefforts. In addition, he formerly was the Global Carpet Business Manager for Shell Chemicals, moving PTT (Triexta) polymer into aleading position for carpet applications, and he pioneered the product applications and business development activities to commercialize bio-based Polylactic Acid (PLA) polymers at NatureWorks. He currently serves on the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce, Georgia NorthwesternTechnical College, Piedmont College Alumni Association, Northwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership, and The Roman Open Charities boards. Vann is a2010 graduate of Leadership Dalton-Whitfield and an alumnus of Piedmont College where he graduated with adegree in Business Administration. He married his college sweetheart, Valerie Powell Brown, and has three chil- dren, Garrett, Tyler,and Kendall. John graduated from North Whitfield High School in 1975 and signed up to join the Army.John served as aMilitary Police Officer and, spent 3years in Germany.Upon his returntoDalton he worked as apolice officer.Hereceived his BS in Criminal Justice from Brennan College. John became an entrepreneur and founded Affordable Sales in 1986. He currently spends the majority of his time in Real Estate Investments. John has served his community on several boards such as the Dalton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Dalton Downtown Development Authority,Cherokee Estates Youth Home among others. John and wife Jackie live in Dalton and have 2children, Kate and Alexander. John Davis Peacock Alley Kelly Fletcher North Georgia Business Machines Kelly,bornand raised in Dalton, owns and operates North Georgia Business Machines, located in downtown Dalton, where he provides sales and service of office equipment to North Georgia businesses. He graduated with honors from Furman University in 1990 where he earned aB.A. in Accounting. He is aCertified Public Accountant licensed in Georgia and worked from 1990 to 1997 for Arthur Andersen in Atlanta, Georgia where he specialized in real estate tax consulting. From 1994 to 1997 he further specialized in Initial Public Offerings where he helped develop the con- cept and implementationoftax deferred Initial Public Offerings for Real Estate Investment Trusts, called UPREITs. Kelly moved back to his hometown in 1999 and founded North Georgia Business Machines. He has served as aboard member for the Downtown Dalton Development Authority since 2008 and has chaired that board since 2010. He and his wife Haley live in Dalton. David Jolly J&J Industries After graduating from Dalton High School in 1984 and receiving aBSinFinancial Management from Clemson University in 1988, David served three years on active duty in the US Army.Upon his release from active militaryser- vice, he returned to Dalton and began work at J&J Industries in September of 1991 in the Marketing Department. He was named president in 2007 and CEO in 2010. David graduated from the Leadership Dalton/Whitfield course in 1993 and was president/chairman from 2001 through 2003. He graduated from Leadership Georgia in 2009 and currently serves on the following local boards of directors: United WayofNorthwest Georgia, Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce, The Carpet and Rug Institute, and Christian Heritage School. David and his wife, Karen, have 3chil- dren and reside in Whitfield County. Jim Kortum Windstream Communications January2012 Jim Kortum is vice president of Windstream'sGeorgia and Alabama operations. The Nebraska native holds abach- elor's degree in business administration. Jim transferred to Georgia prior to Windstream'sformation in 2006 through the spinoff of Alltel'swireline business and merger with VALOR Communications Group. Jim, agraduate of Leadership Dalton, class of 2008, is currently on the boards of the Whitfield HealthcareFoundation and Junior Achievement of North Georgia. Jim and his wife Laurie, have three children, Christopher, Claire, and Jacob. Windstream, headquar- tered in Little Rock, Ark., is acommunications and technology solutions provider,specializing in complex data, high- speed Internet access, voice and transportservices.
