There are many reasons to like living in
the harrisburg area, but, as a news guy, I
especially appreciate that many people are
so engaged.
Folks really care what's going on around
here, something I see every day through
conversations, phone calls and online
comments.
Take, for example, the reconstruction of
Front Street, which began last month.
A spirited discussion erupted on our
Facebook page among those who support
the road redesign and those who oppose
it. People feel strongly about the issue, and
I was happy to see a vigorous exchange of
ideas (though some of the comments could
have been more respectful).
Likewise, a story about the city wanting to
shut down a few bars gained more than
5,000 Facebook shares, while a great blog
post by senior writer Paul Barker about a city
cop playing basketball with a kid on Penn
Street tallied almost 4,000.
In addition, we keep printing more copies
of our flagship monthly magazine in a (so
far) vain effort to try to keep up with the
demand. And, more and more, the most
committed local news nerds tell me that they
look forward to TheBurg podcast, our weekly
discussion of city news.
Print, online, podcast—people want to know
what's going on around here.
With that introduction, welcome to our June
issue. This month, we dive headlong into
summer with our annual local travel section.
Turn to the middle of TheBurg if you'd like
some cool, offbeat ideas on where to take a
quick trip in and around central PA. our cover
by designer/illustrator and all-around good
guy rich hauck might inspire you further.
For those who need something even closer,
the issue is filled, as always, with great local
places to eat, shop and enjoy a little music
and culture. Lastly, I hope that Paul's feature
story leads you to explore what I consider to
be one of our most underused and glorious
assets—City Island.
Thank you, harrisburg, for being so engaged
with your community. It makes this editor's
job so much more enjoyable.
