This is a tool that allows a high school student to almost prototype the career that they're con- sidering. Another related tool was decision boards. As you're going through that process of, I'm not sure what I want to do, you're collecting these dif- ferent schools and different majors as options and then you can leverage the entire professional network. If you're considering these two schools or debating between these two majors, now you can ask your net- work for help. Q: What work still needs to be done to help students find the right job after they graduate? A: On the employer side, there needs to be more clarity around what are the specific requirements for a given job. When you think about the reason for unem- ployment or underemploy- ment, it's twofold. One, it's a simple problem to describe, but a very diffi- cult problem to solve, which is matching supply and demand. Let's assume that the jobs are actually out there and the students that can do these jobs are out there, but they're just unable to match. The job- seeking experience is still very fragmented. There's on campus tours, lots of online tools so some con- solidation would definitely help. Q: What's some of the best career advice you've received? A: My daughter is a big fan of "Frozen" and one of the quotes in the song is "the past is in the past." My interpretation is learn from your mistakes and move on. From my experi- ence and not necessarily at LinkedIn, I have seen people who try things and they don't necessarily work and they are stuck in this loop. Action is more important than inaction, so if you're thinking between the two, take the action. linkedin ... from page 2 only while they are in college. But an internship after you have graduated can be just as valuable, especially in an ultra-competitive job market like the one today's graduates have found themselves in. Even if the internship won't earn you a dime, it's a chance to get your foot in the door and gain experience. Many companies are more inclined to consider past or current interns for full-time entry level positions than they are outside candidates. Don't be afraid to expand your job search to internships even if you already earned a college degree. Such opportunities might just prove your best chance to get your foot in the door. • Volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to give back, avoid the stir craziness that can accompany unemployment and put something positive on your resume rather than a big gap. In addition, volun- teering can be a great oppor- tunity to meet people and do some networking. A fellow volunteer might work in your field or know someone who does, and this person or per- sons can prove an invaluable resource for a young person just starting out. • Stay focused. A job hunt can be exhausting, and it's easy for a young unemployed person to grow disillusioned about a process that seems to rely so heavily on random- ness. But studies show that young women are already facing an uphill battle when looking for a job, and losing focus or allowing yourself to be discouraged will only make that hill more steep. If you are truly passionate about your field of study and devoted to finding a job within that field, then your chance will come if you remain patient and continue to focus on your job hunt. career pointers ... from page 2 EQUIPMENT REPAIR SERVICE MANAGER Apply in person at: LOCHEN EQUIPMENT 512 Franklin Street Newburg, WI Manager would oversee the repair of agricultural tractors, skid steers, ag machinery and lawn and garden equipment. 244415002 Recruiter will be on site June 1, 2, 3, 4 from Noon-5pm at: 6161 S. 6th St. Milwaukee, WI 53221 or apply online Hollandregional.com/careers!
