Cushing From Page 1 "The whole time he was bleeding to death," he said. Because Cushing could no longer raise his voice above the noise level, he told Fuger his firing com- mands. "These guys are such a team," Krueger said. "It's a ballet." Soon after, Cushing was struck in the face by a bul- let and as he fell to the ground, Fuger caught him. One historical account says Fuger pro- ceeded to fight hand to hand before pulling out. This point in the War Between the States was a high water moment, Krueger said. The goal of the Confederates was to break past the Union line and march to Baltimore or Washington, D.C. — both of which were about a one-day march from Get- tysburg. If the Confeder- ate Army was able to storm either city, the war would have essentially been over. "The life of a nation hangs on those guns," Krueger said. Fuger lived well into his 80s and wrote about his time in the Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions dur- ing Gettysburg. Cushing's descendants were present- ed his Medal of Honor last November at the White House. During Memorial Day weekend, a four-day cele- bration of the 100-year anniversary of the Cush- ing Memorial Monument in Cushing Park will be held. "I've been fascinated with the American Civil War since a child," Krueger said. "There is something about the inde- scribable sacrifice and how close we came to end- ing it; the experiment of 1776 could have come to an end on the battlefields of Virginia, Tennessee ... ."
