Alonzo Cushing, a graduate of West Point Academy and a Delafield native, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions at the Battle of Gettysburg. At top is Cushing's Medal of Honor. YOUR GUIDE to the Cushing Memorial Park Monument anniversary By Katherine Michalets Freeman Staff DELAFIELD — As the story goes, Lt. Alonzo Cushing died in the arms of his First Sgt. Fred- erick Fuger on the battlefield at Gettysburg. During Memorial Day weekend, the two men's Medals of Honor will be displayed side by side in Delafield's City Hall, which local historian David Krueger said will make for a com- pelling sight. A German immigrant, Fuger did civilian work in the United States before enlisting in the Army during the Indian Wars. During the Civil War, he served as first sergeant of Battery A, 4th Artillery under the com- mand of Cushing, whose family were early settlers of Delafield. Many of Cushing's last moments were documented by Fuger, who was with him at Cemetery Ridge during the third day of fighting at Gettys- burg and during the infamous Pickett's Charge ordered by Gen. Robert E. Lee. The ridge formed an angle and Cushing's men put their guns there to help keep the Confederate Army back. As the fighting went on, many of Cushing's men were killed and Cushing had extensive injuries from shrapnel. Despite being severely wounded and having to hold in his intestines with one hand while using the other to issue commands, Cushing fought on, Krueger said. "I think there's a powerful, palatable feeling when you are stand- ing at Cemetery Ridge where Alonzo's guns were," Krueger said. It was Cushing's role to determine what kind of munition would be fired and at what range. When Cushing was told to move back and take care of himself by a higher-ranking official, he declined and said he wanted to move forward, further down the hill, Krueger said. This special edition of Lake Country This Month focuses on Delafield's native son and Civil War hero Lt. Alonzo Cushing who received the Medal of Honor for his bravery. Inside this publication, you'll find a guide to the four-day Memorial Day weekend events that pay tribute to Cushing, as well as profiles of the Civil War re-enactors who will be in attendance, a reflection by local historian Margaret Zerwekh and the history of the Cushing family who produced several admirable sons. Special Edition Events pay tribute to Delafield native and Medal of Honor recipient Alonzo Cushing A statue by an unknown artist depicts Sgt. Frederick Fuger aid- ing a severely injured 1st Lt. Alon- zo Cushing during the third day of fighting at Gettysburg. Both men were awarded the Medal of Honor for their bravery.
