"And physically cross off the items on the list as you go," Hansen added. "Stud- ies show that crossing things off a list produces endorphins and helps keep us motivated." ■ Declutter on a regular basis. One way to do this is to have a rule that for every new item purchased and brought into the home, donate or discard two older items. "Making this a habit and having this sort of mentality helps you keep clutter under control," Hansen said. Also, donate the items right away or put them in your car to be donated the next time you're running errands to keep the items from finding their way back into the home. ■ Designate a donation area. Whether it's a bin, a box, a shelf in a closet or an area of the base- m e n t , set aside a loca- tion for unwant- ed or u n u s e d i t e m s . Having a designated area and donating items on a regular basis helps every- one in the family get on board with managing clut- ter in the home, she added. ■ Remove emotional attachment. Some people have diffi- culty parting with an item, even if that item no longer serves its purpose, because of the emotional attach- ment placed on it. "Put yourself in some- one else's shoes and look at the item from their per- spective," Hansen suggest- ed. "Ask yourself, 'Is this something I'm really going to miss?'" If you want a physical reminder of the item, take a picture of it. If you aren't sure whether you will miss it, distance yourself from it by placing it in a box or removing it from sight, Hansen said. Then, give the item a deadline. If you haven't thought about or missed the item by the time that date rolls around, it's time to let it go. The transformation that takes place by following these few simple steps goes beyond the walls of a room. Hansen said one of the best things about her job is seeing the personal trans- formation that takes place in her clients. "Sometimes people just need a little nudge in the right direction to get start- ed. By the time we're done, there is a lightness about them, a difference in their self-esteem," Hansen said.
