Rock 'n' Roll High School Club unites students over common love of music By Lauren Anderson Freeman Staff PEWAUKEE — Pewaukee High School teacher Mike Callies teaches language arts by day, but by night you can hear him playing guitar in his acoustic trio band. Those two worlds have come togeth- er this year after Callies launched a new club for high school students who share his interest in live music. The club is designed for members — about 20 students in all — to explore their musical interests outside the tra- ditional high school outlets of band, choir or musical theater. Some of the students participate in those groups too. But for others, it's the first club they have joined in high school. Most of the rock instrument staples — guitar, drums, keyboard, bass and vocals — are represented among the club members. Senior Austin Baylor was in Callies' speech class last year when he heard about plans for the club. Once it became a reality this year, Baylor was eager to join. "It was an opportunity I had been waiting all summer for," he said. Senior Visaya Phattaphone was also enthusiastic about the opportunity. A self-taught drummer, Phattaphone saw a schoolwide email announcing the new club and knew it was the right fit for him. "I thought to myself, this is a great outlet," he said. "This is finally the chance to do something that I've want- ed to do, instead of forcing myself into other clubs. I'm glad to have found this club." See ROCK, PAGE 2A Beauty
