By DAVE FIDLIN Special to The Post MILWAUKEE — Walker Square, a near South-Side neighborhood in Milwaukee, is in for a makeover, city officials say, and public input will be vital to the planning process. Hoping to catch some of the momentum that has spurred developments in nearby neighborhoods Walker's Point and the Menomonee Valley, organizers within Walker Square are working with city offi- cials to craft a long-range redevelopment plan for the community. Walker Square — bound by South Sixth Street, National Avenue, Cesar Chavez Drive and Greenfield Avenue — recently began housing a new Milwaukee Area Technical College microcampus at 816 W. National Ave. Fittingly, a neighborhood meeting was held last week in the facility, which was renovated to accommodate a variety of MATC's programs, including English as a Second Language and GED classes. Down the road, MATC's Walker Square campus will also host courses under the umbrella of the masonry, career pathways and green technology programs. A range of personal enrichment courses aimed specif- ically at residents in and near Walker Square are also in the works. "We want to be a good partner in the community," said Al Luna, director of MATC's Office of Workforce and Economic Development. "We want to serve the com- munity." During last week's neighborhood meet- ing — the first in a series of planning ses- sions that will provide feedback as city offi- cials draft long-range plans — Alderman Jose Perez lauded MATC officials for work- ing with the city and Walker Square organ- izers. "Having this campus here is going to be such a valuable resource," said Perez, who represents Walker Square residents on the Milwaukee Common Council. "We've been working very diligently to ensure this cam- pus reflects the values of the neighbor- hood." Beyond the MATC campus, city officials are envisioning an action plan document that will call on building or redeveloping existing facilities to accommodate new housing, public gathering spaces, commer- cial areas, and accommodations toward bicyclists and pedestrians. Richard "Rocky" Marcoux, commission- er of the city's Department of City Development, said he envisioned the MATC campus serving as a catalyst to future economic growth in Walker Square and surrounding neighborhoods, particu- larly the Menomonee Valley. "This facility is going to be able to help feed development in the future," Marcoux said. Despite his expertise, Marcoux encour- aged the several hundred attendees to have an active role in planning Walker Square's future as efforts pick up steam in the months and years ahead. 2 • Milwaukee County Post • March 27, 2015 'Team effort' seen as key in Walker Square redevelopment volume 21, issue number 10 The Milwaukee Post (ISSN 1544-1776) is published weekly by Conley Media, Milwaukee County 3397 South Howell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53207 For all departments call: 414.744.6370 news display and advertising FAX: 414.744.6884 Classifieds: 800-762-6219 ext. 5005 Classified Fax: 262-334-6252 For display advertising inquires: Daryl Skaradzinski: General Manager - ext. 13 dskaradzinski@conleynet.com For editorial questions: Dan Muckelbauer Editor 262-513-2626 dmuck@conleynet.com POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Milwaukee Post 3397 S.
