Wetzel looks at the street named after him, he said he doesn't think only of the combat that took his left arm. "Since day one, I wear that blue ribbon for everybody," said Wetzel, who lives in South Milwaukee. "It's not only on behalf of me. It's everybody's road — not just veterans. You don't have to be a veteran to be an American." On Wednesday, he was recognized with a stone marker at the War Memorial Center and the renaming of Mason Street there to Gary G. Wetzel Medal of Honor Way. "For one thing, it's nice to be alive and have that rather than having people talk about the past and say that Gary did this and Gary did that. I'm here to hear it," Wetzel said in advance of the recognition for his actions Jan. 8, 1968 in Vietnam, where he served in the Army as a heli- copter door gunner. He said he was flabbergasted by the street renaming and stone marker in his honor. Dignitaries weighed in with praise. Gov. Scott Walker mentioned Wetzel in a statewide proclamation commemorating Medal of Honor Day, which is observed nationally. "I could not be more proud to recognize Gary, he is a hero in the truest sense of the word.
