With that in mind, here are some tips for creating a healthy habitat for local critters. ■ Be a valuable rest stop Stock your garden with small native species of trees, shrubs and flowers to give wildlife needed nourishment, as well as cover from predators. A source of water can be a great resource for visiting fauna. When mosquitoes are most active, change the bird bath water even more often. ■ Promote safety A bird feeder in your backyard, full of water and seeds, will be the perfect invita- tion for beautiful migrating and local birds to stop by. Just be sure your property is safe for birds. Unfortunately, birds don't see clear glass. As a result, millions of birds die every year by striking glass. To protect birds, apply special decals that reflect ultraviolet sunlight. Get out the binoculars! With a few small actions, you can make your yard or garden a wildlife refuge. Creeping savory (Satureja spicigera) is a temperennial (borderline hardy — Zone 6) plant here in Wisconsin and is less popular because of its softer and less spicy fra- grance and flavor. It can be hard to find as well. Most people plant it as an orna- mental groundcover, reach- ing a height of around 4 inches. It's gorgeous in the landscape with its white flowers, and is also a bee magnet, as they all are. Indian mint, aka yerba buena, (Satureja douglasii) is also a temperennial (Zone 5b) and has a trailing or rambling habit, reaching a height of 2 inches and a spread of 6 feet. Works great in containers or wher- ever a trailing/spreading habit is needed. What also makes it differ- ent is that it has a minty fla- vor. This is why it's called Indian mint because Native Americans used it to make minty teas. Its natural habi- tat runs along the coast of California up to Washing- ton. Savory combines well with other spices and can be used for flavoring meat, poultry, fish and vegetable dishes, along with many soups and stews. It is also used in flavoring salami if you decide to make your own someday. Give one or two a try this year, you may find out you have another favorite fresh herb to grow and use. Happy gardening!
