TOWN OF MERTON — An Arrow- head High School swim coach recently reached the summit of Mount Kiliman- jaro, a journey she made in honor of her daughter and others who battle a rare metabolic disease. Ruth Ann Anhen scaled Uhuru Peak on Jan. 8, concluding a six-day trek to Africa's highest point at 19,341 feet. A coach for both the Lake Country Swim Team and the Arrowhead boys and girls swim teams, Anhen has gone on several other adventures to raise awareness for the Cystinosis Research Foundation. She has completed the New York Marathon and the North Face 50- mile trail run, and climbed to Mount Everest Base Camp to raise money for the foundation. For Anhen, the cause is particularly close to home, as her 24-year-old daugh- ter Katie has been diagnosed with the disease. A rare disorder affecting fewer than 500 people, cystinosis severely dam- ages kidneys and other organs. There is currently no cure. Katie received a kidney transplant from her father in 2008. "She is the strongest, bravest, kindest, most resilient person I know," Anhen said. Anhen's recent Mount Kilimanjaro adventure required more resilience than her previous climbing experiences. Acclimating to the high altitude and weather proved to be a challenge. "It is impossible to put into words the difficulty of the day, both from a physi- cal and mental standpoint," she said. "I look back and still cannot believe what we did that day." Climbing for a cause provided the inspiration she needed to see her goal through, she said. "We could not have summited without our guides or each other and without the constant reminder of who I was climb- ing for. Turning back was not an option," she said. All of the money raised from the climb will benefit the CRF foundation.
