It is a natural hybrid of the Cambridge geranium and its roots, little pun there, trace back to the beautiful Biokovo Mountains in modern day Croatia on the Mediterranean. Not being new to the perennial world, it has been gracing gardens and natural land- scapes for years. But now, it has gone from a hidden treasure to the forefront of the gar- den. Biokovo blooms in late spring with masses of white flowers, tinged in pink with pink stamens, giving it a blush look in the land- scape. Although named after a mountain it only reaches a height of 6-feet, 10 inches. This makes it a perfect edging plant for the front of the garden and can even be used as a ground cover in mass. It grows best in part shade and sun here in Wisconsin, like other perennial geraniums, and likes average, well-drained soil. The addition of compost at planting is essential with our lovely clay soils. The semi-evergreen leaves are not only attractive, but offer a fruity fragrance as well. They turn a nice orange and red color in the fall for even more added interest. Maintenance is also a breeze — simply remove any dead leaves in spring and it's ready for the season. If it starts to spread fur- ther than you desire, again simply pull out the spreaders. They are very shallow-rooted and remove easily. It pairs well in the landscape with darker foliage or flowering plants like painted ferns, darker leaf coral bells, other geraniums, tiarella or foam flower, Heucherella or foamy bells, and of course, hostas. It looks great planted with shade grasses such as sedges or Japanese forest grass for contrast. Great as a boarder plant, or planted en masse, in front or under shrubs as well, such as hollies, hydrangeas, viburnums, and ninebarks. It creates a beautiful carpet of color under smaller trees such as pagoda dogwood, hawthorn and birches. It even does well as a rock garden plant and in cracks and crevices. The possibilities are almost endless. Another important feature is that it is a source of food for both the adult, and larvae, of caterpillars and moths. It is also a great nectar source for pollinating bees. Who does- n't like butterflies and beautiful moths and I don't have to mention how important it is to protect our bees these days. There are so many positive attributes to Biokovo that I think it deserves a place in any landscape, so find a spot in yours this year. You won't be disappointed! Happy gar- dening!
