Lighter and contrasting colors are also in style, he said. For example, kitchen cabinets may be painted in one color while the island is a different color. Jahns agreed that kitchens and bathrooms will always be top proj- ects. He said white kitchens and painted cabinetry are in style for kitchens. Homeowners are increasingly looking for man- made stone, such as Caesar stone or cambria, for countertops, he said, but adds granite and other mined materials continue to dom- inate the market. Homeowners often investigate if a master bath is plausible for their house. And whether it's remodeling an existing master bath or adding one, Jahns said the trend is to create one that is a lux- urious style or spa-like. Aging at home Callen said as more people, especially baby boomers, decide to remain in their homes, they are looking to add details that will help them to age comfortably there. "This is where we are going to stay so we should have a walk-in shower. Let's just put up the grab bars now," Callen said of his observations. It's not only baby boomers who are getting rid of bathtubs. "Almost everyone is getting rid of the bathtubs and going for larg- er showers or walk-in showers, Riemer said. Before hiring a company or individual for a project, Callen suggested checking what kind of rating the company has with the Better Business Bureau, if it's a member of the National Associa- tion of the Remodeling Industry and to speak with previous cus- tomers. He said it's a good idea for a homeowner to have an idea of their budget and to go to a show- room to see materials. Then, peo- ple can see if they really want granite countertops and deter- mine if it will fit in their budget. Jahns said because Refined Ren- ovations in Wauwatosa is a design and build firm, he encourages clients to trust them to come up with the design. "Often we can solve the problems in one way or another," he said. If a person wants to get some ideas to discuss with the remodel- er, in addition to magazines, Jahns suggests using the website Houzz.com, which is like the Pin- terest for remodeling and building projects. "It gets their own mindsets going in a way to know that there is a wide range of possibilities," he said. "It may open the door of their mind to those possibilities." Riemer also suggested a home- owner get a quote for every proj- ect and ask what she can expect for extras. continued from Page 1 Remodel Photos courtesy of Mukwonago Remodeling Left: When homeowners consider remodeling their home it's often to open up the kitchen to make it a better space for entertaining, like this Mukwonago kitchen that Mukwonago Remodeling handled.
