The Pewaukee High School wrestling team made sure of that. Following a narrow 8-6 overtime victory by Pewau- kee junior Ted Nevermann in the opening match at with New Berlin, the Pirates rolled to a not-so-narrow 57-6 Woodland Conference victo- ry last month. Pewaukee veteran coach Ed Kurth summed the meet up. "We won the matches that we were supposed to win and we split on the matches that were toss-ups," Kurth said. "It was a good meet, but we're trying for shutouts because you don't want just one kid to lose. In wrestling, if you give up points, some- body lost. No matter who it is, we have to do something to improve so they don't lose, period." It looked as if Nevermann might be the first one to lose after falling behind 6-2 to New Berlin freshman Mike Baumann with 40 seconds left in the third period. "I wasn't feeling too good at that point," admitted Nev- ermann. "I just tried to keep my technique, listen to the coaches, keep my head in the match and stay positive. I just had to push ahead and drive towards the victory." A reversal with 24 seconds remaining was followed up by a two-point near fall that tied the match 6-6 with 14 seconds left in the third peri- od. "It was a tough finish for Mike (Baumann) because he wrestled a really good match for five and a half minutes," New Berlin coach Patrick Detmer said. "If you make one mistake against a good team like Pewaukee, they will make you pay for it." In overtime, Nevermann scored a takedown 18 sec- onds into the extra period for the win. After that, the Pirates reeled off six straight wins, including a forfeit, to open up a 33-0 lead. During that stretch, pins came from senior Isaac Lodise at 138, senior Jason Berg at 160 and senior Jacob Becker at 182. At 195, New Berlin senior Alex Rodriguez edged Pewau- kee senior Christian Dischler — a result that caused Kurth to leave the gym to cool off. "There were some really tough non-calls at 195," Kurth said. "It's frustrating. I walked away because I knew we had all those other (upcoming) matches. I wasn't walking away from kids that were going to need me there." As for Dischler's effort, Kurth said, "He did a lot of things right. He's got to learn that when the referees aren't making the right calls, he still has to pull it out. He has to continue to add to his repertoire, just as everyone else needs to." From there, Pewaukee went on a pin binge with sophomore Blaze Beltran (220), senior Giovanni Guarnero (285) and fresh- man Eric Halverson (120) each earning a pin. In the meet's final match, New Berlin freshman Mike White nipped Pewaukee junior Brett Danner 6-5 in the 126 battle. White came away with a reversal with 1:10 left in the third period and was able to keep Danner down until the final second when White let Danner go for a one-point escape. "We tell our kids to be a champion every day," Det- mer said. "That's our motto, and that's where we want to be. Here's a team (Pewau- kee) that, based on recent success in state and in con- ference, are champions. I knew we would be need a champion effort to be com- petitive tonight. Coming into the season, we knew we had a young team. Overall, it was a learning experience against a championship-cal- iber team like Pewaukee."
