After receiving favorable recommenda- tions from several panels last week, the Milwaukee Common Council on Tuesday decided to delay a vote on the hotly contested streetcar that could link downtown com- muters to the lakefront and the East Side neighborhood on a 4-mile loop. The council spent little time deliberating on the streetcar proposal at a Dec. 16 meeting. A small majority cast votes to delay a vote, including Aldermen James Bohl Jr., Joe Davis Sr., Bob Donovan, Joe Dudzik and Tony Zielinski. But a munic- ipal provision further states a vote can only be delayed once, meaning aldermen will have to formally vote with a "yes" or "no" when the issue returns to the council agenda Wednesday, Jan. 21. Last week, the council's Joint Committee on Downtown Streetcar Implementation voted to recommend moving forward on the design of the transportation system, which could entail $49 million in public funding to bring it to fruition.
